How to find your purpose and passion in life?

how to find your purpose and passion in life

I was conducting a study some time ago as to the feasibility of a certain endeavour when I came across a talk show video on YouTube; which was the fuel that started a search for specific answers to a question: ‘how to find your purpose and passion in life?’

In this video was a particular quote- a Mark Twain’s which I must now have referenced at least a dozen times in my conversations.

“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why”, he said.

How loud those words resonated in my mind; and, even now, still resonate.

More importantly, they caused me to become more conscious of purpose- of my reason for being. To at least imbibe a semblance of the divine into my thoughts. And, to live with a sense of awareness as to my predefined mission statement.

And, the consonant question I pose to you: have you found the ‘why’ behind your existence? Have you found your life’s purpose?

If one is oblivious as to the purpose of his life, he is bound to live an unfulfilling life. Akin to a sea man setting sail without a terminus and thus traveling with no aim or objective in mind.

Because, any ‘success’ accrued is in fact an aid to someone else’s destination- a service to their purpose. Wouldn’t one be better off finding his own purpose and succeeding at it? Wouldn’t that be a better designation for success?

Admittedly, there are different views as to what constitutes success. Noteworthy are the thoughts of Ron Cordes and Raj Sisodia.

Ron and Raj’s view

Ron Cordes, founder of the Cordes foundation, an organization impacting the life of millions across the globe posits that success is ‘to find and fully live your purpose in life, and to leave an enduring legacy of having made a difference to the world’.

And, Raj Sisodia, co-founder of conscious capitalism and professor at Babson college says this of success: ‘I define success as living my true purpose and having a positive impact on the lives of people by uplifting them and inspiring them to think and act in ways that they may not have considered before’.

From both perspectives, it is clear that discovering your purpose is the necessary criterion for success. The very first step to achieving true success.

How to find your purpose and passion in life?

So, how does one discover his purpose? Well, what are your passions? What do you derive joy in? If you factor out, even if for a moment, the thought of money, what would your rather spend your day doing? Because, with well over 7 billion people in the world, there would always be a need for whatever you choose to do- provided you can do it well. And, you’d be surprised as to the extent of the demand.

A life outside of purpose carries with it an often intermittent air of discontent. A feeling of wanting to be more. A yearn to live a better life. And, there is a better life- a higher life.

A life where the early morning alarm becomes eagerly anticipated. A life where you wake up with absolute joy and there are feelings of vivacity merely thinking about your job or your craft. There is such a life.

In conclusion, I’d leave you with a T.D Jakes quote:

‘if you can’t figure out your purpose, figure out your passion. For your passion will lead you right into your purpose’.

And, what a happy and contented life you shall lead. Voilà!
